PRE GAME ARTICLES
The Avalanche has blocked 52 shots in three games. Karlis Skrastins has been the
team's leading shot blocker with 13, seven in Game 1. Whoever's doing the dirty --
and sometimes painful-- work, Theodore is grateful.
"It's good for a goalie to know that when they're in front of their guy they're going to
stop it," Theodore said. "And if they're not, I'm going to see it and save it. It's a real
plus as a goalie to see a lot of blocked shots."
Sacrificing yourself to prevent a possible goal can be painful work. But the Avs
have done it well, and they're hoping to continue that trend.
"Guys are sacrificing their bodies at all times," Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said.
"There's no question that guys taking away time and space are the main objectives.
We've done a pretty good job of closing those gaps."

"I don't know if that's nerves or [being] scared to make mistakes,"
Stars captain Mike Modano told the Dallas Morning News. "You can
sense a little tentativeness to our game."
Power of positive thinking is positively useless for Stars

"They have such a great hockey club, they get a win, they get on a roll," Avalanche captain
Joe Sakic said Thursday. "Nobody here wants that to happen."
So, instead of exuding cockiness over their commanding lead as they head into
Game 4 Friday night at the Pepsi Center (TSN, 8 p.m. MT), the Avalanche are proceeding
with extreme caution. After all, the series-clinching win is always the hardest to secure.
"The games get tougher every game," Colorado coach Joel Quenneville agreed.
"Closing out a team is the toughest.
"It is the toughest challenge you can face."

"It's a good feeling to be in this position, but we also know they have a great hockey team," said Colorado center Joe Sakic
"Everybody's been very resilient," Tanguay said. "I think that's been the key to this whole team."
"This team in the past hasn't taken advantage of some of the leads we've had in a series,"
defenseman Rob Blake said. "So we have to force the issue, not sit and wait and see what's
going to happen. (The Stars) are a veteran team with guys who have won Cups and their
best game is going to be (tonight)."

Avalanche face their 'toughest challenge' in Game 4 against Stars
"They have such a great hockey club, they get a win, they get on a roll,"
Avalanche captain Joe Sakic said yesterday. "Nobody here wants that to happen."
So, instead of exuding cockiness over their lead as they head into Game 4 tonight
at the Pepsi Center (TSN, 10 p.m.), the Avalanche are proceeding with extreme caution.
"They won't go down without a fight," Colorado forward Ian Laperriere said.
Added Colorado goaltender Jose Theodore: "Nobody relaxes in the playoffs.
Getting the fourth win is the toughest. We expect to see their best."

Theodore finds home away from home
"He reminds me a lot of (Patrick Roy) in the sense that he doesn't really
panic during flurries of shots," Avs right wing Dan Hinote said. "Whereas
sometimes you see goalies flopping around, trying to make the incredible save,
he's always in good position. And he's ready to make, I think, the fourth,
fifth and sixth save, whereas other goalies might be able to only make the first two."
"I think he's finding his game," Brisebois said. "Like we've seen, no goals
in the third period, where a huge save can make all the difference in a game.
If you look at a lot of the goals, they've been bouncy goals, off skates and stuff
like that. Maybe two or three goals, they've really beat him, like the first one
(Wednesday) night and the first goal in the first game. But he's stopped the
big shots when we've had to have them."

"We tried to get a little too cute with the puck at times," Avalanche coach
Joel Quenneville said. "We had a lot of plays around the net, but we tried
to make the better play instead of the simple play."

Stars avoid sweep thanks to strong effort by defense
"A game like this, where it's do- or-die, it's not hard to give everything you have,"
Turco said. "We know we can play well and we don't wish anything different.
We want to do it this way. We want to earn everything we get. There is a great
belief in this locker room, and it really shone through."

"It's the kind of game we expected from ourselves the whole series, to
play like that, play on the edge," Turco said.
"Too bad we had to wait until we got down 0-3 to play our best hockey."
