Wide-open West could go to Avs
Led by Sakic, Colorado is a cohesive, confident Stanley Cup contender

The top four seeds in the West are gone, all ousted in the first round.

That leaves the conference up for grabs, and if any of the
four semifinalists has an edge,
it's the Avalanche because of the dominant play of star center Joe Sakic.

A big surprise in the first round was the play of defensemen
Brett Clark, Karlis Skrastins, and John-Michael Liles. These are not
well-known names, but they played terrific hockey.
Clark and Skrastins averaged over 24 minutes of playing time per game, and Liles
logged nearly 19 minutes a contest.

Back to the moment. Sakic has two Stanley Cups and seven overtime goals
in the playoffs, an NHL record.
Karlis Skrastins has the second longest games-played streak of any
defenseman in league history,
behind only Tim Horton.

Steve Konowalchuk is back from a bad wrist to resume his bloody-nose
work as Colorado's top defensive forward.

And there's Andrew Brunette, whose goal ended the Dallas series, and
he's been here before. In 2003
Brunette was in the conference finals and was the only Minnesota player
to nudge a puck past Giguere
in Anaheim's four-game sweep.

That will leave a mark
Maybe Colorado should change its colors to black and blue, because the Avalanche showed
no fear in blocking shots in its opening-round series against Dallas. Defensemen
Rob Blake (21 blocked shots) and Karlis Skrastins (20) led the way.
