The Avs aren't expecting Andrei Nikolishin to be back for the start of the

Another BIG congratulations to J-M LILES!
scoring in Sunday's game made J-M Liles' 10th goal this season!
John-Michael Liles' 10th goal set a Quebec-Colorado franchise record for a
rookie defenseman.
The Nordiques' Pierre Lacroix had nine in 1979-80.
(No, not that Pierre Lacroix.)
Another little fact:
The Avs' 28 overtime games this season tied the franchise record set a year ago.

04.05.2004: Avs Mail Bag by Adrian Dater, Denver Post
ONE Question From The MailBag
Adrian - When the Avs win the Stanley Cup, will Steve Moore's name be on it
or does a player have to play in the playoffs in order to get their name on the Cup?
-- Vilay, Topeka, Kan.
Vilay - Good question. Yes, Moore would get his name on the Cup. A player who plays
more than half a team's regular-season games, or one game in the Stanley Cup Finals,
is eligible to get his name on the Cup. There can also be special exceptions,
if a team decides. So, yes, Moore is eligible, having played 57 games this year.

April 2nd, 2004: Avs Beat BlueJackets 4-2
According to Canadian sports station TSN, Vancouver forward Todd Bertuzzi has
hired an attorney to handle legal matters related to his attack on Colorado's
Steve Moore. Vancouver police are considering charges against Bertuzzi, but
Moore said he has not considered filing a civil lawsuit.
"With Tanguay out, Hejduk mired in slump"
"It hurts, yeah," Hejduk said of Tanguay's absence. "He's a great player.
I played with him so much the last five years, we get used to each other."
The Avs expect Dan Hinote and Marek Svatos to the return to the lineup Friday in Columbus.

03.31.2004: "Avs hopeful Liles Can Fuel Powerplay"
"Teemu has been working hard," Avs coach Tony Granato said. "I think his skating
has been better lately. He kept trying to do the things to put himself in scoring
positions and he got rewarded."
"What doesn't break you makes you stronger," Selanne said. "I know that now."
Selanne Breaks Scoreless Streak
Afterward, Selanne got hugs by two of his young boys, and the Finn was flashing
his infectious smile. The Avs just hope more smiles will come.
"I don't want to talk about the slump anymore," Selanne said. "Hopefully that's over now."
"My first memory actually is well after I had been taken off the ice, in the
medical room at GM Place,," he added. "I can't explain how scary it is to kind
of wake up to a nightmare. "I'm playing a game, the next thing I know I'm
lying in a room with medical personnel standing over me. I have a neck brace
on and I'm having my equipment cut off of me and I'm strapped down, and I really
had no idea what was going on. It's pretty scary."

*NOW HEAR THIS*
Gary Bettman has seen and heard enough.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the NHL Commissioner sent a memo to all
teams last week warning coaches and general managers that they are accountable
for the behaviour of their players on the ice.
"Usually it doesn't matter who scores the winning goal as long as we win,"
Selanne said. "But of course, when you have been struggling like I have been
it's nice to get the confidence boost like I can get from this and move on."
"It was nice to see Teemu get a big goal," Avalanche coach Tony Granato said.
"That is what he is here for. That is a big goal for us and a big point.
It feels good to win."

Congrats Teemu and Avs!
Colorado seemed to get a lift from Steve Moore, who made his first appearance
at a game since a hit by Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi broke his neck three weeks
ago and ended his season.
Moore waved to the crowd from a luxury box midway through the first period
during a standing ovation that lasted nearly a minute.
"It was awesome. It was very emotional to see him before the game and see that
he's doing good," Selanne said. "I think that everybody was pumped to play well
and get the win for him."

the Avs' innaugural campaign in Colorado.

032504: RIVALRY IS BACK! DETROIT vs COLORADO tongith!
"Obviously, it's been a rivalry for so many years. It's hard to keep that up,"
Avalanche defenseman Rob Blake said Wednesday after practice. "With Vancouver
being in our division and the things that have happened the past couple of
years, it's changed this rivalry a bit.
"But the important thing now is that the best hockey games in the NHL right now
are Detroit-Colorado - whether it's in the regular season or the playoffs."

¥ Milan Hejduk: One goal in nine games.
¥ Paul Kariya: One goal in seven games, two goals in 19.
¥ Steve Konowalchuk: No goals in six games, one goal in nine.

Avs Acquire Darby Hendrickson Rocky Mountain News Article: Feb. 26, 2004
"Last year he played very well against us in the playoffs," Avalanche coach
Tony Granato said of Hendrickson. "He's an experienced guy and he's got some good speed.
You can't have enough guys to take draws in your own end and play a solid defensive
role down the middle. That's what he's capable of bringing us."
"Forward Brad Larsen has been reunited with former Avalanche coach Bob Hartley
in Atlanta. The Thrashers claimed Larsen on waivers. Larsen totaled two goals and
two assists in 26 games . . . To make room for Hendrickson, the Avalanche returned
forward Mikhail Kulesov to the Hershey Bears. "
Thrashers claim Larsen off waivers
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday claimed forward
Brad Larsen off waivers from the Colorado Avalanche.
Larsen is expected to join his new teammates for practice on Thursday. In 26 games
with the Avs this season, Larsen recorded two goals and two assists. He also had
four goals and 13 helpers in 21 games with Hershey of the AHL.
The native of Nakusp, British Columbia has notched four goals and 14 assists in 92
NHL games with Colorado from 1998-2004. He earned a Stanley Cup championship in 2001
under Bob Hartley, who is now Atlanta's head coach.

If Peter Forsberg's troublesome groin muscle forces him to miss tonight's game,
he will have missed stretches of three, 19, four and three games this season. ...
In addition to Adam Foote and Rob Blake, others who have been out include Andrei

Brigley (back, six). Brad Larsen is at Hershey on a conditioning assignment after
recovering from a groin injury.
Protecting "star" players
The NHL can "protect" its stars by better defining what a cheap shot is and sticking
to that - whether it's against a third-line center or a first-team NHL all-star winger.
The calls have to be democratic. Referees instinctively differentiate between stars and
others in the sense that they know the enforcers, for example, but to expect them to
define "stars" and adjust accordingly is absurd.

02.17.04: NO TRADE WINDS: Any Avalanche fan worth his foam finger knows

"We're not going to do anything if it's not going to make us better," Lacroix said.
"So far, there's nothing happening."
Comments From The Game, Feb. 16, 2004:
"It just mystifies me why this happens in this league. They talk about players
not having respect for players. How about the officials? Should they not have
respect for the leading scorer in the league? When does that come? When does
that come?" Crawford demanded, as the intensity in his voice and his anger
burned hotter with every carefully chosen word.
"That was a cheap shot by a young kid on a captain, the leading scorer in the league.
And we get no call. We get no call," Crawford said.
"That is ridiculous. How does that happen? That's got to be answered.
Why is there is no respect from those referees for the leading scorer in the league?
I do not understand that for the life of me. I don't care if they fine me. I really don't.
That needs to be answered.
"Thank you."
"You don't know what they are going to call. First period,
they're calling everything. The next thing you know, you can get away with it,"
Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote said. "It was just a free-for-all at the end.
That's this league."
"I don't think it was a good game," said Avalanche goalie David Aebischer,
who made 20 saves. "It was a weird game with a lot of penalties, not a real good rhythm,
which is unusual for these two teams."
Avs Are Pissed!
"Ruutu causes trouble every time he's out there," said Forsberg, who was

"I came out of the zone and the puck looked like it was going to come out to the neutral
zone," Moore said. "It went right to their guy, and I just came out and finished my check.
I didn't even know who it was. I just finished my check the way we always do,
and I guess it ended up being Naslund, and I guess they weren't too happy about that.

Feb. 14, 2004: Saturday's game was played without incident 10 days after Foote
accidentally high-sticked Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman in the face at the

introductions and whenever he touched the puck.
"Sometimes I was waiting (to hear boos) and they didn't know I had it," he said.
"Then all of a sudden (the boos) came. It seemed like every time I had it on
the (power play), I was dishing it off to Paul (Kariya). I was looking to him to save me."

And, From the Avs Mailbag:
Adrian: Any chance of John-Michael Liles being considered for rookie of the year?
What kind of numbers would he need to get noticed? Who are the players likely
to win the award?
-- Matt Sopris, Carbondale, Colo.
No, Matt, I don't think Liles has a good shot. He might get a smattering of
consideration, but generally the award goes to the highest-scoring forward.
Right now, I think the frontrunner is Trent Hunter of the Islanders. He looked
pretty good when New York came to town last week, and he's closing in on
20 goals. Liles doesn't have flashy scoring numbers, and his defensive play,
while solid, isn't rivaling that of Scott Stevens or Rob Blake just yet.

Avs' Blake king of defense, By Mark Kiszla
Denver Post Sports Columnist
Who is the most valuable player of the Avalanche?
The answer is as obvious as a bone-rattling check by defenseman Rob Blake.
There might not be a better skater on the planet than center Peter Forsberg.
You might not see a better save in the NHL this season than the way goalie David
Aebischer has stopped the Avs from being haunted by Patrick Roy's retirement.
Denver might not ever produce a classier ambassador for his sport than captain Joe Sakic.
But the No. 1 reason the Avalanche is the No. 1 team in the league is Blake.
The NHL can start engraving his name on the Norris Trophy now.
Says Blake: "All our players talk about is winning the Stanley Cup.
It's not about just making the playoffs or making money. "

A QUESTION SENT TO ADRIAN/ DENVER POST:
"Adrian, I've been noticing that Karlis Skrastins has been getting more ice
time lately than Derek Morris. Although Skrastins has turned out to be a pleasant
pickup in the offseason, I'm a bit surprised by all of this. Has he replaced
Morris as the third defender in Tony Granato's rotation? Thanks!
-- Nick Brownlee, Seattle
That's a good question, Nick. While I don't think Skrastins has "replaced"
Morris on the depth chart, the fact is Morris' minutes have been down a bit
lately, and he's suffering through a long goal slump. Morris has only four goals
right now, and has gone 26 games without one. I don't think his play has been
as good as last year, and I think it's a little bit of a worry for the coaching staff.
Morris needs to chip in more offensively, especially on the power play.
And, his plus-minus is down from last year. He gets caught out of position at times.
Granato hasn't said anything bad about Morris publicly, but the reduction in minutes
is a clear sign he isn't totally happy with his play. Skrastins has been excellent
all year. He's durable, good in his own end and a pretty good skater. Morris can
be an X factor in whether the Avs win a Stanley Cup or not. He's the kind of guy
who can put a team over the top if he chips in, to supplement what you expect to get
from the superstar players. If he doesn't, it can mean a team coming up just short. "

WINGS RIVALRY RESUMES
"I don't think anybody knows what will happen with the labor situation,"
Avalanche left wing Paul Kariya said, "but until that happens, it's going to be fun
to be part of the Colorado- Detroit rivalry. It's definitely the biggest rivalry in the NHL,
and as a fan I always enjoyed watching the games."
Entering this season, the Red Wings' $77.8 million payroll was tops in the NHL.
The Avalanche has a payroll of $60.9 million. Contrast that with the 1989 Stanley
Cup champion Calgary Flames - $8 million Canadian, about $6.9 million in American currency
- and you get the picture of how much salaries have risen in 15 years.
But over the long term, history has shown the best-paid teams usually win in the end.
Detroit and Colorado have five Stanley Cups between them since 1995, while no team in
the bottom 15 of overall payroll has won a Stanley Cup in that time.
With owners promising they won't go forward with the 2004- 05 season unless the
collective bargaining agreement is altered substantially, these final months of the
season likely will mark the last money-is-no-object battles between the Avalanche and Red Wings.
"Both teams have the same mind-set," Avalanche defenseman Rob Blake said. "Both
teams have only one goal: to win a Stanley Cup. It's been that way for the last bunch
of years, and it's the same thing this year. Both teams have management that does whatever
it takes to give themselves the best chance to win. That's why it's so great for a
player to be part of these organizations."

Two Minutes with Adam Foote
(2/2/2004)
YouÕve been with this organization since 1991-92. What were your feelings on Opening Night
as the banner recognizing the franchiseÕs ninth consecutive division title went up?
ÒI was pretty happy I didnÕt have grey hair yet. Seriously, it was a great moment
for everyone involved with this team and itÕs an accomplishment weÕre all proud to
have been a part of." Your father was a police officer. Did you live in a disciplined
household growing up?
ÒOh, yeah. I always had to be in before dark. No, it wasnÕt that bad.
You said during an interview on Patrick Roy Night that Patrick, your former roommate
on the road, watched Òsome bad TV.Ó Can you elaborate on the programming choices?
ÒIt was bad. His favorite shows were Murder She Wrote and The Andy Griffith Show.
It was terrible.Ó
You and Patrick were close friends?
ÒMost people donÕt get to know Patrick the way I did. Not only was he a great player on the ice,
but he was great off the ice as well. We had a great relationship, and I learned a lot from
him and he learned a lot from me. Just look at how much his English improved!Ó
WeÕve seen you in a few commercials here in Denver over the years.
Thinking about an acting career when your playing days are over?
ÒNot a chance. The boys are so lucky that I have this nose, otherwise IÕd be on
Baywatch. No, no future acting career, but maybe a commercial or two.Ó
Did you go trick or treating with your kids this Halloween?
ÒNope. We were on the road. They still found plenty of candy to keep themselves wired
for the next two months, though.Ó
WhatÕs the best toy Santa ever brought you for Christmas when you were growing up?
ÒDefinitely the Incredible Hulk. YouÕre not going to put that in, are you?Ó
THIS JUST IN: has nothing to do with hockey but is quite interesting!

Selanne said Thursday morning he isn't offended about being asked about playing on the third line.
"I understand, because a lot of people are wondering that, too," he said. "As a player,
you just have to look at it like it's Mr. Granato's decision who he wants to play together.
"I can play first line, I can play third line, I can play fourth line. I think I can do all those jobs.
If it's helping the team the most on the third line, that's my job. I understand that people
are asking about it, because my friends are asking about it."

"
I can't say enough good things about Tony as a coach," defenceman Rob Blake said.
"Some guys need to be tweaked differently than others, and Tony knows how to do that
while doing it in the right way and keeping a guy's respect."
"We didn't feel we took a chance," Lacroix said. "Look at the record:
Everything we thought of him, he's delivered. His whole (playing) career he's been
recognized as a firm leader, a solid personality, a guy who had limited talent but had a big heart."
Jan. 24, 2004 Game WON: 5-3--"It's not always easy, at the end of a long
road trip, getting up for a game," said Konowalchuk, whose deflected goal late in the
second period was the game-winner.
"Today, I think we stopped playing a little, and let them back in the game," Forsberg said.
"But overall, I think it was a pretty good game for us. We've been playing well,
especially defensively. The 'D' has been holding the puck, and the other team's got to chase
us down a little bit."

ATLANTA - Avalanche defenseman Karlis Skrastins was castigated by Florida Panthers
forward Marcus Nilson after Wednesday's game for refusing a fight to settle an old score.
Skrastins' check from behind in the most recent world championships gave Sweden's
Nilson a concussion. Nilson tried to fight Skrastins, to no avail.
"He hit me with a dirty hit that put me out for three months," Nilson told The Miami Herald.
"At least he owes me a fight, I think. He has to be, without a doubt, the most gutless

Did Peter pop the question? Has Foppa taken a fiancee?
by Penny Parker, Rocky Mountain News-Denver,CO USA
One sharp net-surfing reader found a ditty in an interview with former Stanley Cup-winning
Avalanche player Shjon Podein on ESPN.com Monday that talked about "Peter Forsberg and his
fiance . . ."Podein wrote new lyrics for Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Song in honor of his
move to the Karlstad hockey team in Sweden.
Podein has moved to the "land of the midnight blondes" from the St. Louis Blues.
His musical creation, The Hakan-Hannukah Song, sets to tune the names of many Swedish
hockey players, including Swedish star and former Karlstad captain Hakan Loob.
In one stanza, Podein writes, "Sweden's Peter Forsberg and his fiance like to go dancin'
"So do Roger, Mathias, Calle, Bjorn and Andreas Johansson."
Turns out that Podein was taking some literary license. Forsberg has been dating the adorable
Alyssa Rome, a DU law student, for nearly three years, but she remains ringless, according to
Avalanche spokesman Jean Martineau, who checked with Peter The Great.

I would say Teemu Selanne is the new funny man. He's friendly with reporters, and loves
to sit and "hold court," telling funny stories. He's usually giving the business to Paul Kariya,
known for his seriousness. Selanne has a light-hearted view of the world. He makes fun of
Kariya's penchant for thriftiness, and likes to give it to other teammates. Joe Sakic is
very funny when he wants to be. He can needle people with the best of them.

"Sometimes when it gets so bad, you learn from it," said Sharks center Mike Ricci,
a former Colorado player. "This was a big test for us. That's a great hockey team,
and we had some key guys hurt on our team. So did they, but you have to play well against
the great teams in this league. We're just confident now. We're playing the same way
every night. When it comes to details, this team is very sound, and that, with our great
goaltending, gives us a chance to win every night."
Ricci said Finnish backup goalie Vesa Toskala, who had 32 saves for the Sharks, "
probably saved the game for us. We battled and we found a way to get two points."
"It starts in the net," said Colorado coach Tony Granato, who finished his playing career
with the Sharks three years ago. "They've built that team around their goaltending."

Svatos almost certainly will still be considered a rookie next season.
Here is what the NHL says about rookie qualifications: "To be considered a rookie,
a player must not have played in 25 or more NHL games in any preceding seasons, nor
in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons. Any player at least
26 years of age (by Sept. 15 of that season) is not considered a rookie."
Unless Svatos comes back fast from his shoulder injury (not likely), he won't have
enough games played this year to get out of rookie status.

"Dear Aebbie....."
"I have something to prove to myself and to this organization," Aebischer said softly
after that tie in St. Louis. "I'm not Patrick Roy, but I was lucky enough to be able to
play behind him, listen to his every thought on the game. Hear him talk goaltending for
the last three years. I absorbed a lot.
"Most of all, I was able to watch his every move and learn about the mental toughness he
had to face the pressure of trying to establish records, win Stanley Cups and be the
best goaltender ever."
"It's been a big change this year," Aebischer admits.
